Setting up a personal hotspot
26 APRIL 11
back to What's New
Since the recent update for the iPhone (iOS 4.3) you can now create a Personal Wi-Fi Hotspot using your phone and the data on your iPhone.  This means you can use your phone's data plan to get on the Internet with your iPad (or any other wireless device).  This saves you having to have two data plans (one for your iPhone and one for your iPad) as now you just need one for your iPhone.  This also means that if you have an iPhone and you are considering purchasing an iPad, then you can just buy the Wi-Fi only version - so you save money!

All the below information is from the Apple website.

You must have iOS 4.3 to enable your personal hotspot.  If you don't then you will need to plug your iPhone into your computer, open iTunes and download the latest version.

Sharing your mobile data connection

Tap Settings > General > Network:

Settint up your personal hotspot

Tap Personal Hotspot and turn it on:

Turn on personal hotspot

You will then be given an option to choose whether to enable Bluetooth or USB.  On iPhone 4 if Wi-Fi is currently off, you will be prompted to enable it:

Enable Wi-Fi for your personal hotspot

After configuring your Personal Hotspot, you can directly access the settings from Settings > Personal Hotspot

Note: You cannot use your Wi-Fi connection for Internet connectivity while other devices are using Wi-Fi for Personal Hotspot.  You can only share a Mobile Data connection; you cannot share a Wi-Fi connection.

Connecting other devices
You can connect to your device in the following ways:
  • Mac or PC: You can share your Mobile Data connection using a USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi connection.
  • iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or other Wi-Fi device: You can share your Mobile Data connection using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.  The Wi-Fi network name or Bluetooth name is your device name.  The Wi-Fi network uses WPA encryption.  It's name is your device name.
While devices are connected to Personal Hotspot, the status bar will be blue and will indicate the number of connected users.  You can disconnect users by turning off Personal Hotspot, unplugging your device, turning off Bluetooth of by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi and either turning off Wi-Fi or disconnecting current users.

Disconnect Wi-Fi users

iPhone 4: Changing your Wi-Fi password
Personal Hotspot Wi-Fi networks require a password.  You cannot disable this feature.  You can change your Wi-Fi password by tapping Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > General > Network > Personal Hotspot and then tapping the Wi-Fi password.

Changing Wi-Fi password

Note: Your Wi-Fi password must be at least eight characters long and use ASCII/Unicode characters.  Use of non-ASCII characters (Japanese, Russian, Chinese, etc) will prevent other devices from connecting.
