Beware of the following phone scam
08 FEBRUARY 11
Recently a customer called us saying they'd had a phone call from a company in Florida telling them that their computer was infected with a whole host of viruses and that they were calling to help. The person on the phone then requested a credit card to be able to proceed to clean up their computer and remove all viruses. Our customer followed along dutifully allowing this "helpdesk technician" on the phone to help him with his computer. This then resulted in a frantic call to us to check out their IT system, he had to cancel his credit card and filed a report with the Fraud Office.
The reason we are alerting you is that there have been many cases such as this where companies call up, are provided with credit card information, and then they max out innocent people's credit cards illegally.
The other very alarming issue that we'd like you to be aware of, is that if someone calls and you allow them to guide you to do things on your computer, invariably they install viruses and Trojans that will allow remote access into your system to catch even more data such as passwords and personal information.
So, unless you know the person on the other end of the phone, please don't give them any of your details, no matter how legitimate they sound! And, if you are a customer of Optimus Systems, you will only ever have one of our team calling to discuss your IT.
Here are a couple of links to news stories regarding this recent scam:
If any of you have had a call such as this please get in touch with the team at Optimus as soon as possible so that we can sweep your computer and ensure there is nothing installed that could be detrimental to your IT security and your business or personal data.
